Philly Cheesesteak
Share
My Philly Cheesesteak recipe is super simple to make!. Throw in onions and mushrooms should you choose, serve on your favorite hoagie roll and you've got a dinner that's on the table in under 20 minutes!
I don't know about you, but I love going to Penn Station and sinking my mouth into a juicy Philly Cheesesteak. The juices run down my arm, it's packed full of flavor and the cheese pull...well the cheese pull is worth everything. Not to mention those damn fries with malt vinegar! Yeah! I'll take a large order of fries!
If you know me, I'm a busy Mom of a blended family of 5 kids now! I don't have time to make lavish meals, but I do have time to make good meals! Much like my Homemade Alfredo Sauce recipe, this cheesesteak recipe is just as quick to make at home and saves money!
I'm on Keto, How Can I Eat Philly Cheesesteaks?
Anyway, the better part of the last 5 years I've lived a keto/low carb lifestyle. So while I don't eat much of carbs, I will for a Philly Cheesesteak. I've also took the meat and veggies and stuffed into peppers that have been deseeded and the top cut off, then top with provolone cheese, stick it in the oven for a few minutes and you have a low carb keto version of a Philly Cheesesteak! It's however you wanna do it, I'm just trying to give you healthier options my friends, that's it!

What Cheese For Philly Cheesesteak?
I'm a fan of a white cheese on a Philly Cheesesteak. I typically will do provolone, however you can also do mozzarella.
If you prefer the yellow cheese, drizzle some melted Velveeta or even those Velveeta packets that they sell now. You can even heat some nacho cheese up and go with that!
What Cut Of Beef Should I Use?
To make this busy Moms life easier, I buy the steak that's already shaved. However, if you can't find that are your local grocery or meat store, I recommend getting a ribeye, sirloin or even a flank steak.
You'll want to shave the steak down as thin as you can get it, so ensure that you are using a sharp knife. Another tip for shaving the steak is:
1. Place the steak in the freezer for about 30-45 minutes. This helps slice it easier and get that thin cut.
2. Be sure to thinly slice against the grain.
Ingredients Needed For a Philly Cheesesteak
- Shaved Steak
- Mushrooms
- Onion
- Mayo
- Provolone Cheese
- Hoagie Buns to serve
How To Make Philly Cheesesteak
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil with onions. You want to sauté them on medium low heat until they become soft and translucent. I choose to do sliced onion, but you can totally dice them up as well!
- Once the onions have sauteed add in the mushrooms. Be sure to season both the onions and mushrooms with salt. This helps to bring the moisture out of them and become soft. Not to mention, they need the flavor.
- Once the mushrooms have broken down and soft (they will turn a darker color) add in the shaved steak along with 2-3 tablespoons of your favorite steak seasoning. I’ve been obsessed with our local butchers steak seasoning (we try to support local as much as we can!) as well as the Texas Inspired Seasoning that I pick up at Kroger.
- Cook the steak until it’s cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Make sure to toss the steak around in the onions and mushrooms.
- Grab your hoagie buns and place mayo on both sides of the bread. Put as much or as little on as you’d like.
- Place steak on top of the bottom roll and the provolone cheese on top. Place in an air fryer on 350° (or the oven) to toast the bread and melt the cheese. In the air fryer it’s about 1-2 minutes and for the oven expect 5-8 minutes.
- Serve with homemade French fries, chips or if on a keto or low carb diet I serve mine over a bed of lettuce!
