Variations
- Nut-Free: Skip the peanuts or substitute with additional M&M’s or other favorite candy.
- Chocolate Variations: Swap out semi-sweet chocolate for milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate for different flavor profiles.
- Add-Ins: Experiment with other mix-ins like crushed toffee bits, dried fruit, or mini marshmallows.
- Flavor Enhancements: For a richer caramel flavor, add a splash of vanilla extract to the caramel or a sprinkle of sea salt on top before chilling.
Ingredients
- 2 cups Semi-Sweet Chocolate
- 1 ½ cups Mini Salted Pretzels
- ½ cup M&M’s
- ½ cup Peanuts, chopped
For the Homemade Salted Caramel:
- 1 cup Sugar
- ½ cup Butter
- ½ cup Heavy Cream
- ¼-½ teaspoon Sea Salt (adjust to taste)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Pretzel Base
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Arrange the mini salted pretzels in an even layer on the parchment paper.
2. Melt the Chocolate
- Double-Boiler Method: Fill the bottom of a double boiler with water and bring to a simmer. Place the semi-sweet chocolate in the top part of the double boiler and stir until melted and smooth.
- Microwave Method: Place the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each interval, until completely melted and smooth.
3. Assemble the Bark
- Pour the melted chocolate evenly over the pretzels.
- Sprinkle M&M’s and chopped peanuts evenly over the chocolate.
4. Make the Homemade Caramel
- In a medium saucepan, heat the sugar over medium heat. Stir constantly as the sugar melts and turns into a light amber color. Be cautious, as sugar can burn quickly.
- Once the sugar is fully melted, add the butter. The mixture will bubble up, so be careful.
- Stir the butter into the melted sugar until completely combined. Gradually whisk in the heavy cream.
- Allow the mixture to boil for 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the sea salt. Let the caramel cool slightly.
5. Finish the Bark
- Drizzle the homemade caramel over the pretzels and chocolate. You might not use all of the caramel, depending on your preference.
- Chill the Bark: Cover the baking sheet and place it in the refrigerator. Chill for several hours to allow the chocolate and caramel to set completely. If you're short on time, you can place it in the freezer for quicker setting.
6. Cut and Serve
- Once fully set, remove the bark from the refrigerator or freezer.
- Cut into squares or break into pieces with your hands.
- Serve and enjoy the perfect balance of sweet, salty, and crunchy flavors!
FAQs
Can I use pre-made caramel sauce?
- Yes, you can use store-bought caramel sauce as a shortcut. Simply drizzle it over the pretzels and chocolate. For a thicker caramel layer, reduce the sauce by heating it gently until it thickens.
How long does the bark stay fresh?
- When stored in an airtight container, Chocolate Caramel Pretzel Bark will stay fresh for up to two weeks at room temperature. For longer storage, keep it in the refrigerator where it can last up to a month.
Can I freeze the bark?
- Absolutely! To freeze, place the bark in an airtight container with parchment paper between layers to prevent sticking. It will keep well in the freezer for up to three months. Let it thaw at room temperature before serving.
How do I ensure the caramel doesn't harden too much?
- Be cautious not to overcook the caramel. If it starts to harden, gently reheat it over low heat and stir to soften before drizzling.
Can I make this bark vegan or dairy-free?
- To make this recipe vegan or dairy-free, use dairy-free chocolate and substitute coconut milk or almond milk for the heavy cream. For the caramel, look for vegan caramel recipes or pre-made vegan caramel sauces.
